Places! Without a stage manager, how will an actor know when to go on stage? How will the technician know what light queue is next? How will the stagehand know when and where to set the chair before the next scene. Stage managers don’t just call places! Stage managers call the show.

Stage Management is one of the most essential roles in any theatrical production or any live performance for that matter. The stage manager keeps track of all moving parts of a theater production, from call schedules to blocking and designer notes. Working side by side with the director during the rehearsal process, the stage manager helps execute the director’s vision for the show. This requires creativity and innovative thinking that sets good and bad stage managers apart. Like a fellow cast member, the stage manager must synch up to the rhythms and beats of a play. In the Stories High Stage Management Workshop, we will explore how creative, exciting, and vital stage management is to theater.

Kat Evasco is the Production Manager at Youth Speaks and the Lead Production Manager for Brave New Voices. Evasco began stage managing at Bindlestiff Studio in 2005 and since then has stage managed seven theatrical productions. She has stage managed for Guerrilla Rep, Joan Osato, the Youth Musical Theater Company, and Campo Santo. Evasco’s stage management credits include ALAMAT directed by Louie Pascasio (2005), I CAN DO THAT Theater Project: Monday Golden Sun directed by Jeannie Barroga (2009), PARADE the Musical directed by Jennifer Boesing (2011), and NOBODY MOVE directed by Sean San Jose (2011).
